Paulo Ferreira

Full Name     Paulo Ferreira
Birth Date     January 18, 1979
Birth Place     Lisbon, Portugal
Height     1.82m

Weight       76 kg
Age       31
Position       Defender
Squad No       20

Paulo Ferreira was initially signed as right-back by Chelsea in the summer of 2004 yet he has never settled into that position during his time at the Bridge.

The player began his career with Estoril, before moving to Vittoria Setubal in 2000 and then FC Porto in 2002.

Ferreira impressed greatly as Porto won the treble of UEFA Cup, Portuguese title and cup in 2002/03. And he was also a vital figure in the surprise 2003/04 Champions League success.

After being a regular in the Portugal Under-21 side, he made his full debut in September 2002 against England.

But he suffered a poor Euro 2004 with Portugal, gifting the opening goal of the tournament to Giorgos Karagounis as Greece shocked the hosts 2-1. He was then dropped and did not feature again in the tournament until coming on against Greece in the final defeat.

Ferreira then followed FC Porto coach Jose Mourinho to Chelsea for a fee of £13.3million.

Ferreira was the first player Mourinho signed for the right-back role and he had a steady, if not spectacular, first season in the Premiership as Chelsea won the title along with the Carling Cup.

But since then Ferreira has failed to win a regular place at his prescribed role, featuring on the left and even in the centre of the Blues' defence. His versatility was rewarded when he signed a five-year extension to stay at Chelsea until 2013.

Alex

Full Name     Alex da Dias Costa
Birth Date     June 17, 1982
Birth Place     Niteroi
Height     1.88m

Weight        92 kg
Age        27
Position        Defender
Squad No        33

A forceful centre-back who usually plays second fiddle to John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, Alex joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven after what was essentially a three-year loan at the Dutch club.

After earning his spurs at Santos in Brazil, he was signed by Chelsea in 2004 on the recommendation of famed PSV and Chelsea scout Piet de Visser, but because of potential problems in attaining a work permit, he was loaned out to PSV. That period gave him time to play enough for his country and be resident in the EU so that Chelsea could sign him for the 2007/8 season and pay their 1 euro buy-out clause for the player. At PSV he starred as the best defender in the Eredivisie as they won three straight titles and reached the semi-final of the Champions League in 2005. He also scored the goal that knocked Arsenal out of the same tournament in his last season at the Phillips Stadium.

He had looked set to join Chelsea earlier, when a defensive crisis during 2006/7 saw chief scout Frank Arnesen urge Jose Mourinho to get the Brazilian in early. Mystifyingly, Mourinho chose to bring in Khalid Boulahrouz instead.

When he finally got to the Bridge he had little to time to work with Mourinho as the coach was sacked just six weeks into the 2007/8 season. Injuries to Carvalho and Terry meant he played a full part in Chelsea's season and he rarely let down his new-ish club where his power and usefulness at set pieces became an asset to the Blues.

A Brazilian international, he was a member of the team that lifted the 2007 Copa America.

Ashley Cole

Full Name     Ashley Cole
Birth Date     December 20, 1980
Birth Place     Stepney
Height     1.73m

Weight        68.6 kg
Age        29
Position        Defender
Squad No        3

Nicknamed "Cashley" by disgruntled Arsenal fans following his defection to Chelsea, booed by the England supporters at Wembley after a mistake against Kazakhstan in a World Cup qualifier and generally vilified by the tabloid press, Cole has still established himself as one the best left-backs in the world.

Nurtured through Arsenal's now famous youth ranks by Arsene Wenger the defender really came of age at Euro 2004 when he produced an almost perfect performance at left-back to mark Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo out of the quarter-final clash on his own patch, although England eventually lost the game on a penalty shoot-out.

On his return to domestic football, Cole was "tapped-up" by Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2005 and was fined £100,000 for meeting Blues' representatives in a hotel. He eventually moved to Stamford Bridge in July 2006 following a contract wrangle with the Gunners that saw his popularity hit a new low. Despite winning the double with the Gunners in 2001-02 and being part of the 'Invincibles' who won the league title again in 2004-05 he is not remembered fondly at Emirates. Cole continues to win silverware at Stamford Bridge and has picked up more FA Cup titles than any other player, but is yet to win the league in a Chelsea shirt.

Strengths: Pacy, with great powers of recovery and when he is on his game is very difficult to beat. Very good at getting forward to supplement the attack.

Weaknesses: Can sometimes be rash in the tackle and his diminutive size can leave him vulnerable in an aerial battle.

Career high: Winning the FA Cup and Premier League double with Arsenal as a youngster.

Career low: Losing the Champions League final to Barcelona in 2006.

Style: Quick, attacking, a defender with great stamina.

Quotes: "When I heard Jonathan [Cole's agent] repeat the figure of £55k-a-week, I nearly swerved off the road. 'He is taking the piss, Jonathan!' I yelled down the phone. I was so incensed. I was trembling with anger. I couldn't believe what I'd heard." Ashley Cole after being offered a mere £55,000-a-week by Arsenal.

Trivia: In September 2007 the Daily Star reported that R&B diva Mariah Carey discovered she was a distant cousin of Ashley Cole whilst researching if she was related to jazz legend Nat King Cole.

Soccernet says: Disliked and unloved by the general public, but he would be one of the first names on the team sheet of those same naysayers.

Ricardo Carvalho

Full Name     Ricardo Carvalho
Birth Date     May 18, 1978
Birth Place     Amarante
Height     1.83m

Weight        78 kg
Age        31
Position        Defender
Squad No        6

A dependable defender who will be 32 when the 2010 World Cup comes around, Carvalho is a powerful player who has a penchant for breaking forward from the back.

He made his name in his homeland with FC Porto, excelling under Jose Mourinho as the club won the Champions League in 2003-04. The Amarante-born central defender was subsequently named as UEFA Club Best Defender of the Year and was selected in the UEFA Team of the Year.

With Mourinho headed for Chelsea, Carvalho followed his manager to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2004 in a £19.85 million deal. Carlvalho was a crucial figure as Chelsea won back-to-back Premier League crowns.

Although he has suffered with injury problems in recent years, Carvalho remains a crucial figure for his country. His debut for the Portugal side came in October 2003 in a 53 friendly win over Albania and he soon cemented his place in the squad, travelling to the 2004 and 2008 European Championships as well as the 2006 World Cup.

Strengths: Powerful in the air, physical and combative. Also excellent on the ball.

Weaknesses: Age may be creeping up on the defender and he could be susceptible to pace.

Career high: Being named UEFA Club Best Defender of the Year in 2004 after FC Porto won the Champions League.

Career low: Losing the Champions League final to Manchester United on penalties in 2008.

Style: A player who has become linked with the "dark arts" of the game, Carvalho is supreme at off-the-ball fouls and shirt tugs to put off opposition attackers. It may not be pretty, but it is effective.

Quotes: "Ricky is superb. He has every quality that is needed." Spain and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, July 2008.

Trivia: Avidly listens to the iPod of Hilario, Chelsea's reserve goalkeeper.

Soccernet says: A leader and a tower of strength at the back, Carvalho will need to be at his very best if Portugal are to go far.

José Bosingwa

Full Name     José Bosingwa
Birth Date     August 24, 1982
Birth Place     Mbandaka
Height     1.83m

Weight        75 kg
Age        27
Position        Defender
Squad No        17

Perhaps one of the most attacking full-backs in the game, Bosingwa's pace and ability to get up and down the flanks will create problems, just as Sergio Ramos does for Spain.

Though born in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), he moved to Portugal as a child, beginning his professional career with Freamunde before making his name initially with Boavista. Like many modern Portugese players, however, Bosingwa's stock rose yet further after playing for FC Porto. He joined the club in 2003 and was an unused sub at the 2004 Champions League triumph.

He moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2008 in a £16.3m transfer which saw him keep Paulo Ferreira out of the side. It was Ferreira who had started at right-back in the 2004 Champions League final. Bosingwa was excellent in the 2008-09 season, a danger going forward with great delivery and even the ability to score from distance. It was a surprise that he was initially linked with a move to Bayern Munich at the start of an injury-plagued 2009-10 campaign.

Bosingwa made his debut for Portugal, who he qualifies to play for through his father, in a 21 win over Belgium in June 2007. He was then named in the squad for the 2008 European Championships and his performances led to him being named in the team of the tournament.

Strengths: The archetypal wing back: fast, direct, dangerous and effective at both ends of the pitch.

Weaknesses: Can get caught at the back due to his style of breaking down the wing.

Career high: Being named in UEFA's team of the tournament for Euro 2008.

Career low: Was involved in a serious jeep crash in May 2005 with four other footballers which led to one, Sandro Luis, having his foot amputated. The jeep rolled off the motorway and burst into flames. Bosingwa was suspended by Porto and out of favour for much of the following campaign.

Style: Bosingwa will run up and down the right flank all day, always available for the overlap to deliver into the attacking players.

Quotes: "The biggest compliment should go to Jose [Bosingwa] because I think it was the second time in his life that he played at left back and it was against [Lionel] Messi. But you couldn't see Messi on the pitch today." Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech following a Champions League tie against Barcelona in April 2009.

Trivia: Bosingwa played as a striker and also as a defensive midfielder as a youth player.

Soccernet says: Bosingwa proved at Euro 2008 that he has the ability to shine on the internat
ional stage. Portugal will need a repeat of that form.

Juliano Belletti

Full Name     Juliano Haus Belletti
Birth Date     June 20, 1976
Birth Place     Cascavel
Height     1.80m

Weight       76 kg
Age       33
Position       Defender
Squad No       35

Another member of Chelsea's sizeable Brazilian quartet, Belletti joined the Blues as a highly-experienced solution to their problem right-back position.

Belletti is most famous for coming on as a sub to score the winner in the 2006 Champions League Final for Barcelona, the Catalan giants he joined the Blues from. His attacking instincts mark the fact he began his career as a midfielder, back in Brazil with Cruzeiro, where he made his debut back in 1993. He also played in Brazil for Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro, where he attracted the gaze of Spanish side Villarreal.

The provincial club's improved showings in La Liga made many of their players targets for moves to bigger clubs and Belletti benefitted by joining Barca in 2004.

A decent first season brought the Spanish title yet competition from local boy Oleguer Presas led to the substitute status that made his name. Despite his heroics in Paris he was further relegated by the arrival of Gianluca Zambrotta and 2006/7 saw him edge towards the exit at the Nou Camp.

His signing for Chelsea came as something of a surprise. And though he made 23 appearances in his first season, he found himself in competition with Paulo Ferreira and Michael Essien throughout the 2007/8 season. He came on as a sub in the 2008 Champions League Final in Moscow but, despite scoring a penalty in the shoot-out, he could not repeat the magic of Paris 2006.

A former Brazilian international, his Italian descent make him an EU-registered player so Chelsea did not require a work permit for him. He was a squad member of Brazil's World Cup winners in 2002 yet has not played for his country since 2005.
